This is why we need a workshop

Aurora seems to have a sixth sense about what is the dirtiest, most expensive, or most dangerous object in the room, and she zeroes in on it. In this case, the chop saw is all three.* Zoom! There she goes. I have a dream that someday, when the garage/workshop is finished, and the bicycles, tool chest, power tools, and other related stuff is in there, I will be able to keep my house clean and uncluttered. This may be like thinking that if a Democrat gets elected President, that the U.S. will miraculously have better fiscal and foreign policies – possible, yes, but likely? Go, Obama!** Go, Garage!

* Actually, the VCR is probably more dangerous – she keeps getting her fingers pinched in the tape slot door. We’re hoping she learns that the VCR bites fingers, and stay away from it.

** Oh no! I’d better hurry up and get my voting forms from New Jersey!

Crazy Busy Weekend

Well, Daddy’s home from his business trip, just in time to scamper around all weekend trying to fit in errands, activities and chores. It’s a good thing he took off Monday, so we had a bit of time to relax after the madness. Here are some of the highlights:

Our first swim class! Aurora didn’t seem to really enjoy herself this time, but like with most things, she probably needs a while to get used to it before it becomes fun.

The class is at the Percy Norman pool, about a five minute drive or 20 minute walk from our house, near Riley Park. It’s nice to have a pool so close by.

After swim class, lunch, and nap, we headed over to Ryan’s 1st birthday at Jericho Beach. Unfortunately, we got a bit lost (don’t ask) and arrived way too late to make an appearance at Olin’s party right afterwards. Here’s the lovely Ryan, who has graduated to toddler status, while Aurora looks on with a bit of support. Happy birthday, sweetie!

Peter gets a thrilling ride from his Daddy Julian – he seems like just as much fun as Aurora’s Daddy!

Crawling is now an official mode of transportation for Aurora, not just an expidient way to get from cruise spot to cruise spot. She’s getting fast, too!

Then it was a race to try to get home before my Reading Group gals began to arrive. We had a fun little meeting, and would definitely recommend The Shadow of the Wind as a great read. I also received kudos on this blog, and it was decided that in our imaginary polygamous marriage (which would make things so much easier because then we could split the work according to who does what best) I would be the Shopping and Blogging Wife, so I could focus on where my true talents lie. Thanks for the compliment, guys!

Eleven Months Old (yesterday)!

Sorry I’m not on time with the monthly update, but things are a little busy around here without my right-hand man. Okay, I lie. I actually spent my Aurora-free hours last night trying to make good progress on Shadow of the Wind, the reading group book that I’m supposed to finish by this Sunday night. It’s good, but there are only so many hours in the day, and I keep getting distracted from reading by incidentals like dirty dishes, diaper laundry, phone calls, emails and so on. But enough about me. This is the girl you wanna see:

I promise, this is the last monthly update. From now on, we count in years (and half-years). Over the last month, Aurora’s been doing some amazing things. I think the most surprising thing for me was the crawling. We were sure, from her aptitude for standing and cruising, coupled with her abhorrence of tummy time, that the crawling was never going to happen – she’d go right to walking. Much to our surprise, though, she decided that it was more important to get where she wanted to go than to keep off her knees. Now the baby-proofing is really important, because she can get anywhere she likes in the house. I installed a gate at the stairs, but other than that, it’s mostly a matter of rearranging and supervision.

The biggest difference between last month and this is her sleeping habits. She’s gone from 8-9 hours of broken sleep at night, with one or two 45-min. nursings, to a whopping 11 hours, usually solid. When she cries out at night, we just wait a moment, and she nearly always puts herself back to sleep very quickly. Having that pattern established has been wonderful in every way but one: Daddy doesn’t get to spend as much time with his girl in the evenings. On the positive side, though, Mommy is less of a basket case, we’ve ended the nightly battles to get her to sleep, she’s less easily frustrated during the day, and Mommy can do stuff during the day while Aurora’s napping.

The napping is a much bigger challenge, and I confess, I’m not doing too well at it. I’m supposed to put her down for her naps 2.5 hours MAX after she wakes in the morning, and 2.5 hours MAX after she wakes from her morning nap. This sounds doable until you realize that the wakeup, potty, nursing, dressing, etc. routine takes a lot of time, and then the breakfast/lunch, potty, nursing, story, song routine before the naps also takes a lot of time, and what you’re left with in the middle is maybe enough for a quick game of peek-a-boo. So, I’ve been cheating. Going out for some groceries, maybe a walk at the mall, visiting with friends, etc. As is to be expected, this makes it harder to Aurora to go down, and aggravates the whole process. It got really bad this past week, because I complicated things with a whole bunch of longer outings, like going to ICBC, the doctor’s (twice), Science World and the Aquarium. Now she’s having lots of trouble falling asleep, and Mommy’s the one to blame.

Some of Aurora’s other milestones this month include:

  • Putting things INTO other things, i.e., food back into the tupperware I took it out of, a small ball into one of her nesting cups, grass and leaves into the neck hole of my shirt, and so on;
  • Standing unsupported for 10 to 30 seconds at a time. Could walking be far away?
  • More “talking”, although nothing yet seems to indicate a particular idea;

This month, she’s really taken to swinging at the park, she seems to prefer meat and dairy products to fruit now, and she likes to sit on the grass and pull it out!

Recently we hooked up with our neighbours across the street for a trip to Douglas Park. Evan is 2 1/2, Maren is a few weeks older than Aurora, and Owen (next door) is 9 months old. They make a nice little playgroup!

Aurora still likes to play Peek-a-boo, but it’s wearing a bit thin at times. Having a cool new hiding place livens things up a little.

The September morning light was gorgeous in our living room yesterday. I absolutely love this time of year, when the sunshine slants and filters through the leaves of our big tree, and falls all over the living room floor in bright dappled splashes. The weather’s been perfectly wonderful lately, too. Not too hot and not too cold or wet. Perfect for long walks with my girl, or just hanging out in the living room. Happy Birthday, Sweetie!

If it’s all the same tissue

Babies have such a lot of learning to do, but sometimes it can really get in the way of adult agendas, like keeping the house clean and not wasting things that get used. I didn’t think I should keep saying, “No” when Aurora persisted in pulling tissue after tissue out of the box, so I made her a tissue box of her own.

The ripping sound of a tissue being torn apart is very satisfying, but eventually you end up with mostly very tiny shreds and tearing them loses some of its appeal. I added some red tissue from a present to jazz things up a bit.

The “here you go” and “look what I’ve got” gestures are still almost identical – very confusing for Mommy and Daddy. (Incidentally, the “I’m hungry” and “I’m kissing you” gestures, a big, sloppy, open mouth on one’s face, are also too close to tell apart).

Then of course there is the all-important taste test. Actual ingestion is becoming less of an issue these days.

Daddy’s out of town for five days, and he’s probably missing having these squishy little feet to kiss.

“I love you Daddy! Mommy’s taking good care of me, but come back soon!”

Goodnight Rewrite

I think Aurora’s getting even more bored with Goodnight Moon than I am. Since Sunday night she keeps closing the book while I’m trying to read it. The sleep consultant says it’s important to read the same book every time we put her down for a nap or bed, in order to establish solid cues. I think she’s delusional if she believes we can keep that up. So, since the original is about a little bunny saying goodnight to everything in his room, I started saying goodnight to everything around my little bunny.

Here’s my new version, which Aurora seems to really dig:

In Aurora’s room
there was an octopus
and an ocean of blue
and a ceiling light –
with a jellyfish hanging there, too.

And there were three big doors, and a chest of drawers
and a diaper pail and a killer whale
and a puffer fish and an angel fish
and a turtle and clock and a chair that can rock
and a seagull sitting up high on a dock.

Goodnight room
goodnight sea
goodnight mackerel and garibaldi
goodnight light and hanging jelly
goodnight doors goodnight drawers
goodnight blue pail goodnight big whale
goodnight seahorse and angel fish
goodnight cradle and puffer fish
goodnight turtle and goodnight clock
goodnight chair that makes me rock
goodnight nobody goodnight sock
and goodnight to the seagull way up on the dock
goodnight sky, goodnight air
goodnight noises everywhere.
